Maharey Set Up By Snout
For Immediate Release
Tuesday,
July 20, 1999
Labour's patronizing MP, Steve Maharey, has humiliated his colleagues by allowing himself to be set up by a Social Welfare snout.
Maharey failed to check his facts before releasing a story that WINZ paid $40,000 to cancel its conference.
In fact the cancellation cost was $2,500. "Maharey's failure to make a single phone call has undermined his credibility with his colleagues" said Annabel Young, MP.
"Labour's willingness to use leaks from snouts has backfired. Maharey's eagerness to grab a headline has hurt Helen Clark."
"Labour strategists are trying to maximize their gains from the WINZ affair but Maharey is undercutting them by his failure to check facts. If they cannot manage a public service leak, how would these bunglers ever cope with being in Government."
