Mackey Says One Thing, Does Another
Thursday, 2 September 1999, 4:19 pm
Press Release: New Zealand Government

Mahia MP Janet Mackey’s integrity is under question after
she voted for a bill she told constituents she would oppose,
Enterprise and Commerce Minister Max Bradford says.
“Janet
Mackey last night voted to reinstate the Alliance’s Paid
Parental Leave Bill.
“But earlier this year, in a well
argued article, she told her constituents the legislation
was shoddy, vague, imprecise and patently unfair.
“She has
been caught out saying one thing to her constituents and
then doing another.
“When challenged in Parliament today,
Ms Mackey confirmed whips had acurately cast her
vote.
“This raises questions over the integrity of the
local member,” Mr Bradford
said.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
