Prison Campaign By Donnelly Gains Victory

New Zealand First List MP, Hon Brian Donnelly, says the decision not to build a prison in the Mangakahia Valley is a victory for anti-prison campaigners in the area.

“The Minister of Correction’s decision to build the Prison at Ngawha is a great relief to all those in the Whangarei area who campaigned tirelessly to prevent a prison being built in Mangakahia Valley”, said Mr Donnelly.

Mr Donnelly, who fought against the prison from the outset, had called for the Minister to hurry up his decision to allay the anxiety of the local residents.

“There was real concern that a decision would not be made until after the election, but I am pleased to see that has not happened and now everyone in the Mangakahia Valley can rest easy at night.”

“The support of New Zealand First at a Parliamentary level ensured that the views of local people were heard by the Minister.”
