Appointment of Judge of the High Court

The Attorney-General, Rt Hon Sir Douglas Graham, today announced the appointment of Mr Rodney Harold Hansen QC as a temporary Judge of the High Court.

It is intended that Mr Hansen will become a permanent Judge of the High Court on the retirement of Justice Gallen.

After qualifying as a chartered accountant, Mr Hansen graduated from Auckland University with a Bachelor of Laws with Honours in 1969. From 1975 until 1991 he was a Partner in the firm Simpson Grierson in Auckland. He commenced practice as a Barrister sole in 1991, and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1995.

Mr Hansen has been a member of the Council of the Commonwealth Lawyers’ Association since 1986, and its president from 1996 until this year. He has been a Council Member of the Legal Research Foundation since 1993 and is its president elect.

The new Judge is expected to sit in Auckland from later this year.
