HUGE CYCLONE HITS OZ: Category 5 Cyclone John hits Australia's North West. Cyclone hit a one pub town. Residents evacuated. Oil rig workers lifted to safety. 7 metre storm surge expected. This the largest Cyclone to hit Australia since Cyclone Vance several months ago.

CRANE CRASH: Six cars hit in crane accident in central Auckland when $600,000 crane falls over. Owners of cars stunned. "I think this is a joke -but it is not a joke" says one. Someone could have been but wasn't says another. Appears to be a mechanical problem says investigator.

NEW AMBASSADOR: New US Ambassador Carol Moseley-Braun welcomed at Government House. She faces a diplomatic standoff with the new PM over her intention not to purchase 28 F16s contracted by the previous government. Braun is very diplomatic and says she plans to work on the "strong relationship we have. Our President is very concerned to maintain the strong bonds between the US and New Zealand. NZ and the US are like cousins. We are very close and I expect to maintain that relationship."

PARLIAMENT DELAY? Winston Peters won an extra vote in the recount of the Tauranga electorate. ACT has filed for a recount in Rangitikei. A constitutional expert says it is up to the Governor General to decide whether Parliament is delayed by the recount.

SHADOW CABINET: National Shadow cabinet announced.

LIQUOR BUSTS: Northshore liquor busts. Special circumstances on a sign at a liquor outlet closed till Christmas for selling to minors. Simple techniques used to nab the shops - they simply nabbed youngsters on their way out and asked them how old they were. Another outlet closed for two months for selling to 15 year old. Police say it is a warning. Inspector says she will continue her work.

HOKIANGA MURDERS: Funeral for the two children killed in a triple murder in the Hokianga. Children carried to their resting place. Distraught mother in procession. "She has lost everything "says a friend of the mother who has survived the murder of her two children. The families house will be destroyed with possessions burning away the memories.
