The World Economic Forum and the so called dangers of free trade

The World Economic Forum is about to start in Melbourne and already politics is getting in the way as are angry people angry at the human cost of free trade.

Many misguided protestors claim that the present day is the prime example of why free trade doesn't work, they say that free trade isn't working now so we should change it and that it harshly punishes 3rd world countries.

What kind of free trade do we have now?? All I see are a few small countries (like New Zealand) opening up their borders to trade. What about the big players like America and Europe? No, they preach for everyone else to open up their borders while they can make their products in the comfort of their own tariffs.

This is the fatal flaw in the philosophy of the protests. True Free Trade would make countries open up their borders to tariff-free trade where everyone would compete in a truly level playing field.

Real free trade would allow us to sell our products to the American market at competitive prices that would allow us to reach a far bigger audience. This strategy would CREATE jobs in New Zealand!! But of course you can't have a society WITH jobs and low unemployment, surely not say the greens and other anti-free trade persons!

And will it really make 3rd world countries suffer? NO ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Right now the 3rd world countries are suffering because they can't export their goods to America or many other western countries without crippling tariffs being slapped on them.

They're not playing on a level playing field they're playing on a playing field that is purposefully fixed to harm them.

Therefore, companies(or employers) that want to compete have to lower the amount they pay to staff in order to make their product competitive even with higher tariffs.

These so called 'champions of the human cause' are nothing but misguided fools. With Free Trade we will have crossed the line to a truly borderless society where skin colour and place of birth doesn't decide your chances of success anymore.

The Alliance wants to kill free trade but yet they complain when New Zealand goods that are exported have hefty tariffs slapped on them by America and Europe! Sorry Jim, that's the result of your ignorant brotherhood that stretches all around the world.

We should be sending people to Melbourne to be protesting for the WTO to ACCELERATE the worldwide transition to free trade and liberalising critical markets around the world. Because then, New Zealand can send their products worldwide without the burden of tariffs and it won't matter what country you're born in, the world will be an equal playing field for anyone with will and resolve.
