I.T. Industry needs more investment surprise, surprise

Right at this very moment Labour politicians are scrambling to get to grips with technologies they have only read out aloud about, from speeches written by their speechwriters.

Day after day we hear on the Television/Radio/Newspaper banter from Helen Clark about how she will show leadership and lead New Zealand into the new century. Yet we have actually heard very little from the government in terms of leadership in the IT sector. Yes, Helen's cronies seem to have a sudden attack of amnesia whenever anything IT related is brought up.

I for one am sick to death of this unfocussed, uncommitted waffle. To me it is clear and simple what we need to put some bang into the New Zealand's I.T. industry.

More Computers and More Net Connections. This I find is the single biggest gap in achieving a new age economy. The poorest sectors of societies miss out on technology and so are guaranteed of not being able to join the digital revolution from the outset. Labour should close the digital divide.We should help subsidise local council plans to involve their respective societies in IT related projects

Not only this but we need now to focus on establishing an accessible broadband access grid that will take us into the next phase of the online revolution. By this I mainly mean cable-based as wireless connections.

So how can we get this far? Yes, we need a big capital investment in our IT sector, we put a little faith in them and now it will be up to them to deliver what we expect. I'm not saying the New Zealand government should do this alone either. Where possible the NZ government should act as a facilitator for private organisations to setup these kind of networks. We should provide tax incentives, personnel incentives and any other kind of incentives we can think of for private organisations that help out.

We should bend over backwards to satisfy our New technology sector because like it or not I.T. is our future and the future of the world marketplace and I don't want my children to be left out of the global marketplace just because years before the New Zealand people thought saving a few bucks was more important that creating a better country for their children.
