Phil Goff's UN blather all talk and no action

The New Zealand Liberation Party Press Release

Phil Goff's UN blather all talk and no action

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

New Zealand needs the collective security of the United Nations. At the same time we need to do our part for the United Nations. So far New Zealand's record with the UN has been downright appalling and is a disgrace to the caring population of New Zealand.

In his speech Phil Goff all but sold his heart and soul to the United Nations. In fact the only thing that he didn't sell was the action the United Nations needs to take it forward. He says

"New Zealand shares his determination that member states should recommit themselves to the core principles of peaceful settlement of disputes, equality of nations, the upholding of fundamental human rights and freedoms and the pursuit of social and economic progress for all of the people of the world"

The obvious way to do this is aid. Yet in Mr. Goff's budget he DID NOTHING to increase the amount of money that New Zealand gives out in foreign aid. In fact he has tried to tuck this issue under the carpet. Did you know that the suggested amount of foreign aid the UN requests is 1% GNP?? Do you know how much New Zealand gives? 0.3%!

This is atrocious in a developed nation such as New Zealand. The 1% rule is meant to be an average for the poor and wealthy nations!

As for Human Rights and Freedoms? Do you know what Phill Goff said to the right of the Palestinians to be treated as equal with Israelis in Israel??

"Abstention"!!!

What is there to Abstain about???!!! If Phil Goff really believes in the principle of the United Nations he should look at giving this country a foreign policy and reputation it deserves.
