Housing Red Tape Causes Housing Problems |
||
"The reason people cannot rent the house they want lies at the goverment's door", says Libertarianz Spokesman Keith Patterson.
"Large houses are not available for large families to rent due to Govt planning restrictions and the Resource Management Act," says Patterson. "Any landlord who tries to build an eight bedroom cheap home will run up against a wall of expensive red tape, and realise they cannot make a competitive return on the project."
"Without the government's restrictions on housing, landlords would build any sort of house they could see a market for," Patterson says. "However, the traditional NZ 3 bedroom home that is almost de rigeur for Local Body planning does not suit the Pacific Island extended family at all."
"People who like to live together from cultural preferences cannot find houses to suit them. Do-gooders who complain that these tenants are forced into overcrowding should tackle the real problem: The State's restrictions on housing design."
