GE Free Dunedin Petition Attracts Nearly 3000 Signatures.
Today Dunedin mayor Sukhi Turner will accept a petition calling for the greater Dunedin region to be declared a GE free zone. Her worship will accept the petition at 12.30 pm today on the steps of the Dunedin Council Chambers in the Octagon. To date, 2988 people have signed the petition, which was circulated by the Dunedin Coalition for a GE Free Environment. The petition is ongoing.
“Our natural environment is our most precious resource. Thus we call for the greater Dunedin area to be officially recognised as a GE free zone, and look forward to working with those councillors who have recently expressed support for the issue.” Said Duncan Eddy, spokesperson for the Dunedin Coalition for a GE Free Environment.
“The Royal Commission report attached great importance to preserving opportunities. We feel it is vital that the Dunedin City Council pass regulations that will preserve the future opportunities of local organics and tourism industries.”
Mayor Sukhi Turner, and councillors Teresa Stevenson and Jeremy Belcher all supported the idea of Dunedin being declared a GE Free Zone in the lead up to the recent local body elections.
