International Women's Day: It's time women had equality
On March 8th all around the world women and men will gather to celebrate International Women's Day. In Auckland over the past few years there has been a revival of the day with public celebrations. This year a rally is being held at Freyberg Square, off High Street, with a call 'to value women's work'. The speakers include Sandra Coney: 'Have women lost the plot', and Darien Fenton for the Council of Trade Union's 'Get a Life' campaign.
'Nowhere in the world do women have equality in pay or other basic conditions', says Daphna Whitmore, one of the organisers. 'In New Zealand, thirty years after pay equity laws were introduced women's pay is still just 80 per cent of men's on average. Equal rights are well overdue'. The rally starts at 6pm and includes entertainment and a women's open mike.
