Christmas Cracker - Wrapping it up

Christmas Cracker

3 December 2003

***PRESS RELEASE***

Wrapping it up

The run up to Christmas is a long and drawn out affair and seems to take weeks of preparation … then the big day arrives and before you know it the living room floor is awash with wrapping paper.

Apart from being a nuisance to clear up even the least environmentally conscious amongst us must feel pangs of guilt for such obscene and unnecessary wastage of paper. Wrapping paper must hold the record for packaging with the shortest useful life span.

So, here’s a solution to these cleaning up horrors. How about wrapping your presents in a long life reusable Green Bag?

Not only does the bag come in a festive green colour but it will hold a healthy number of presents – in fact between 3-4 grocery bags worth of shopping can be easily packed inside. Then once the bag of delights has been opened, you can collect the bags up and store them away for the next big grocery shop. And bingo, no mess on your living room floor!

The Green Bags are being distributed throughout New Zealand by the Green Bag Foundation, based at the Christchurch Small Business and Environment Centre, and have already been a success with communities throughout Ireland and Australia.

Designed with the checkout in mind these sturdy and functional bags are 100% recyclable and can be reused many times. The Green Bag is a great step forward towards reducing our dependence on plastic shopping bags and makes a positive difference to the shopper, the supermarkets, the environment and the community – bags can be bought by community groups and schools as a fundraiser and in addition, ten cents from each bag sold will be channelled into a national community waste minimisation fund, administered by the Zero Waste NZ Trust.
