Government sending mixed messages on trade priorities
"What is the logic underlying the Government's decision to pass on 80% of border security costs to business?", questions Paul Winter CEO of the Employers and Manufacturers Central.
"For some time Government has been saying that in this year's Budget they will introduce further initiatives to support Kiwi businesses being more internationally competitive. Industry & Regional Development Minister, Jim Anderton recently acknowledged the social and economic benefits to New Zealand from our exports and yet incredibly government has pinned the majority of the costs of increasing border security measures on our traders. Where is the public good in this?"
"Border security costs affect all traders. So if there was any area of business support that should legitimately be picked up by Government as a public good this is an obvious one."
