Fri, 11 Jun 2004
Head's Up
New Zealand has had a large
delegation from Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade,
Ministry of Fisheries and the Department of Conservation at
this week's UN meeting exploring global governance of the
oceans (UNICPOLOS). The meeting is about to come to
conclusion and a statement regarding bottom trawl fishing in
international waters will be released on Saturday afternoon
(NZ time).
Greenpeace has also had a delegation at the
meeting who have fed into discussions via photo and film
evidence of bottom trawlers in the Tasman Sea beamed from
the Rainbow Warrior to the UN.
Greenpeace NZ will be
putting out a media release on Saturday when the UN
announces their intentions about a moratorium on bottom
trawling in international waters.

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
