Support for Striking Waterside Workers
The Council of
Trade Unions is backing strike action by Auckland
watersiders against casual and part-time work in favour of
secure, permanent jobs, CTU president Ross Wilson said
today.
Members of the Maritime Union of New Zealand (MUNZ)
working for Ports of Auckland began a four-day strike this
morning over casualisation on the wharves.
Ross Wilson has
written to the union’s president, Denis Carlisle, asking him
to convey the full support and solidarity of the CTU’s 34
affiliated unions, representing more than 300,000 workers,
to the striking MUNZ members.
“Permanent employment gives
workers and their families the security they are entitled
to,” he said. “Casual work undermines that security,
affecting family life and the health of workers, as well as
safety on the job.”

Gordon Campbell: On the Sony cyber attack
Given the layers of meta-irony involved, the saga of the Sony cyber attack seemed at the outset more like a snarky European art film than a popcorn entry at the multiplex.
Yet now with (a) President Barack Obama weighing in on the side of artistic freedom and calling for the US to make a ‘proportionate response’quickly followed by (b) North Korea’s entire Internet service going down, and with both these events being followed by (c) Sony deciding to backtrack and release The Interview film that had made it a target for the dastardly North Koreans in the first place, then ay caramba…the whole world will now be watching how this affair pans out.
