Gay and lesbian group organise celebration

Thursday 2 December

A gay and lesbian group says they plan to hold a positive celebration of sexuality following homophobic reactions from conservative groups to the civil union debate.

‘Over the Rainbow’ spokesperson Stevie Wildewood said a Manners Mall street party, called ‘Gorgeous’, would be a celebration of all loving relationships.

It would also be a commemoration of those that have been lost in the battle with HIV/AIDS.

"There has been a lot of negativity surrounding queer sexuality this year, so 'Gorgeous' is even more important - to show that we still have pride in who we are."

Recent negative views expressed about gay people were from a very vocal minority, she said.

Miss Wildewood was also involved with a gay youth group, ‘Schools Out’ at Wellington High School. Earlier this year Wellington High students campaigned to stop Destiny Church meetings on the school grounds.

"It gets scary when you meet people who are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns rather than holding hands."

We want to show how beautiful the queer community and our supporters are, she said.

"'Gorgeous' is about celebration and pride in our identity." ‘Gorgeous’ would also give heterosexual people the chance to celebrate diversity. A wide and exciting range of performers would be announced later this year. “Glitter and love in Wellington’s summer - what a gorgeous sight it will be!"

The event will have a youth focus, she said.
