The Department of Labour’s immigration service has found overstayer Juliette Gilbert at a real estate agent’s premises in Rotorua attempting to rent a home in the area.

Workforce Deputy Secretary Mary Anne Thompson said staff had been making enquiries to locate Ms Gilbert in the Rotorua region.

“We are pleased to say that our enquiries have been successful and led to Juliette Gilbert being taken into custody on Saturday morning. We are not releasing any further detail of the investigation.”

Ms Thompson said Ms Gilbert’s son Sky had been taken into Child Youth and Family (Cyfs) care.

“Arrangements are now being made for the return of Ms Gilbert and Sky to America, as soon as possible. This is likely to occur this week. Staff will escort Ms Gilbert to America, where the American authorities will take over,” Ms Thompson said.

Ms Gilbert surrendered both her and her son’s passports to the Department when she indicated they wanted to leave voluntarily in January. Instead Ms Gilbert went into hiding.
