28 Deaths in Twelve Months, Too Many

Sunday 20 November is the Transgender Day of Remembrance for all the trans people worldwide who have faced violent death since 1970.

Agender NZ and other transgender support services are commemorating this day for the second time at Civic Square in Wellington, one of 250 cities worldwide that will hold ceremonies.

Agender NZ President Claudia McKay said “At this time last year we acknowledged the addition of 23 names to the list, this year the number is appalling, 28, that’s more than 2 a month.

Ms McKay adde, “New Zealand is not immune from this violence and there are New Zealand trans people that make up the nearly 350 known violent deaths since recording began”.

It is ironic that as we remember these people, our own politicians still see us, the trans community, as subjects for derision and are prepared to deny us the clear protection of the Human Rights Act that all other New Zealanders enjoy.” She said.
