WHO IS REALLY MAD?

The Republic of New Zealand Party Health Spokesperson, Jack Gielen, wants to know who is really mad.

He is appalled at the deterioration of mental health services and the rate of suicide amongst fathers alienated from their children.

"It's not good enough to let troubled people into the community. Sheltered support is needed. A shopping mall is not adequate care," Mr Gielen said

Mr Gielen established the New Zealand Suicide Prevention Trust 4 years ago to help separated fathers and mental patients who are being turned out of institutions to fend for themselves.

Mr Gielen said it was obvious that the cost cutting policy of de-institutionalisation has not worked and the patients who are let out on the streets are a danger to themselves and others.

"Too many patients become victims or commit serious crimes. It is the Labour Government who is really mad. They don't care, as long as the costs are cut, even when there is a huge surplus."

Mr Gielen was the Republic of New Zealand Party's candidate for Hamilton West at the last General Elections.

He said the Republicans will protect patients' rights to proper care and make mental health a priority with sheltered villages
