Amendments to Employment Relations Act essential for vulnerable workers
Important amendments to the Employment Relations Act introduced to Parliament today will be of vital interest to many vulnerable workers, says the Council of Trade Unions.
The Minister of Labour this afternoon introduced the Employment Relations Act Amendment Bill, which amends section 6 A of the Act, relating to the transfer of terms and conditions for certain vulnerable workers when a business is sold, or work contracted out.
“The intent of the Act was always to protect the terms and conditions and continuity of employment for vulnerable workers such as cleaners,” said Ross Wilson, CTU President. “The amendments announced today will give effect to Parliament's original policy intent in 2004 when it first addressed this issue.”
“Government has acted quickly to address this problem with the Employment Relations Act, thrown up by last year's Employment Court decision in relation to Crest Commercial Cleaning in Dunedin.”
“The CTU supports the amendments proposed by Government and look forward to the benefits they will bring for vulnerable workers,” said Ross Wilson.
