Workers breathe sigh of relief at death of bill
“Workers will breathe a sigh of relief today with the announcement by the Maori Party that they will stop Wayne Mapp’s probationary period employment bill from going any further,” said Richard Wagstaff, National Secretary of the Public Service Association.
“This bill aimed at stripping workers of their rights would have led to insecure and unstable employment for New Zealand workers and their families.”
The PSA has been running a strong campaign against the bill throughout New Zealand by running workplace meetings, sending postcards to MPs and attending rallies. Maori PSA delegates have been active in Maori communities and on Marae throughout the country.
“We are pleased that the Maori Party has listened to the concerns of New Zealand workers and agreed to vote this bill down.”
The PSA is New Zealand’s largest union representing over 55,000 public service workers in central and local government, health and community services.
