Over 30 bloggers and many blog readers from all corners of the politial spectrum have signed a petition to boycott Subway stores nationwide, indicating that support for Jackie Lang's fight against Subway is widespread.
"In just 24 hours, the petition has received thousands of hits, and the "Bloggers Boycotting Subway" badges and banners has been posted on dozens of websites" says Jeremy Greenbrook-Held, Wellington-based author of "Aucklander At Large" ( http://aucklanderatlarge.blogspot.com). "Signatories have come in from London to Invercargill, and include media commentator Russell Brown, high-profile blogger David Farrer, and Christchurch City Council candidate Tony Milne".
Ms Lang was sacked from her full-time job at the George Street Subway Store in Dunedin after sharing her staff drink with a distressed friend while on a work break. Lang has since been charged with theft, and will appear in the Dunedin District Court next week.
"Subway Headoffice have the power to pull the George Street store owner into line over this trivial matter, but have refused to, and subsequently passed this problem on to every Subway store owner in New Zealand." said Greenbrook-Held. "I'm willing to do without my regular chicken fillet sub to help out Ms Lang".
"Considering it took months for such political unity to be achieved over Section 59, I think our country's leaders can learn a thing or two from New Zealand's blogosphere!" says Greenbrook-Held.
The boycott will end when this matter is fully resolved by Subway and the Police. The boycott can be signed and boycott badges downloaded from:
