citizens have every right to be angry today, says Justice
Spokesman Alan Candy, not because we are expecting another
smoke and mirrors budget, but because last night parliament
did not represent the people. The compromise between
National and Labour did not represent the views of the
public and ignored the principles of
democracy.
Politicians have ignored not only public opinion, but also international experience around similar legislation in forcing through Sue Bradsford’s bill, said Mr Candy, as well as the protocol of the house.
“If there had been a conscience vote, this bill would not have passed its 2nd reading,”
It is a sad day for parliamentarians, parents and children alike, noted Mr Candy, and the Republicans are voicing strong disapproval at not only this legislation, but also the manner in which it has proceeded.
This legislation will not improve our dismal record of child abuse!
