Two males have been caught in the act of stealing from vehicles over the weekend and appeared in court this morning.

A 23 year old male was apprehended at the Waitikeri Golf Club car park early on Saturday afternoon. He appeared in the Christchurch District court this morning on 22 charges of theft ex cars across the city over the last four weeks.

A 25 year old male was apprehended in the early hours of this morning in the Peterborough Street allegedly in the process of breaking into vehicles. Police were alerted by a member of the public. He will appear in court today on three charges of theft, two of receiving and one charge of possessing an offensive weapon.

DI Malcolm Johnston, O/C Operation NITRO, which is targeting theft ex cars, says it is excellent work by group staff.

"It is a reminder to not leave items of value in your vehicle especially not visible," he says. "If an offender sees a handbag or a lap top it gives them a good reason to break in to your vehicle rather than the next one."
