Child abuse and school violence linked says Trust

Sensible Sentencing Trust press release 30th July 2007:
From National Spokesman: Garth McVicar

Child abuse and school violence linked says Trust

The escalating violence in schools and child abuse is inextricably linked and will continue to rise until society returns to basic tried and proven methods of dealing with these problems.

“The very fabric of society is at stake here – New Zealand is at crisis point – the status quo will not do and more of the same is not an acceptable answer. Right is right and wrong is wrong – no grey – no more excuses.”

That is the opinion of the Sensible Sentencing Trust and they say part of the solution must be a return to traditional family values of discipline and respect in homes and corporal punishment in schools.

“The rising level of child abuse and escalating violence in schools and our communities is directly linked to the as yet unfinished warm-fuzzy social experiment that has removed all forms of accountability from young peoples lives,” said Trust spokesman Garth McVicar.

“We know what works – but we have allowed a vocal majority to implement a philosophy – that has destroyed these traditional values and is causing the escalating break-down in law and order and indeed the deterioration of society itself.”

“This experiment has been carried out under the guise of human rights – but – society has the fundamental right to expect a certain standard of behaviour from all of its members all of the time.”

“We have now removed the ability of parents, schools and Courts to enforce any sort of accountability – and sort of respect – and we are harvesting the product and reaping the rewards right now. An increase in child abuse, and increase in violence in schools and on the streets.”

“To reverse this nonsense we must bring back discipline in homes and corporal punishment in schools.”
