Airport Development Opponents Petition Parliament

Airport Development Opponents To Petition Parliament

Maori and Pakeha groups calling for justice for the original owners of land at Paraparaumu Airport will petition Parliament at 1pm tomorrow.

The Petition, with over 2,500 signatures, will be handed over to MP Darren Hughes by the leader of the Maori group, Mr Peter Love, who represents Te Whanau a Te Ngarara (original Maori landowners).

Mr Love will be accompanied by other Maori and a large group from the Paraparaumu Airport Coalition on the Kapiti Coast.

The Petition calls for the Airport Authorities Act Amendment Bill to be passed unaltered by Parliament.

The petitioners want Parliament to ensure that Paraparaumu Airport is used only for aviation and aviation-related businesses.

It also calls on the Government to address ownership issues and to prevent the destruction of the alternate runway for commercial development, as planned by the Auckland developers.

Earlier in the day (10.10am), Mr Peter Love will present the submission from Te Whanau a Te Ngarara to the Select Committee on Transport and Industrial Relations, sitting in committee room one.
