Responsible shooters dismayed by comments

NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL OF LICENSED FIREARMS OWNERS INC

MEDIA RELEASE

18th January 2008

"Responsible shooting sports men and women are dismayed by comments attributed to anti-Council of Licensed Firearms Owners Inc (COLFO).

"There is no evidence to support Mr Alper's suggestion that citizens are misleading Police and obtaining firearms licenses," said Mr Howat. "The New Zealand firearms licensing procedures are robust and effective. They are considered by many knowledgeable people to be the most stringent in the world and are undoubtedly a prime reason for the low level of firearm related crime in this country."

The New Zealand firearms community is not afraid of facts related to firearms' use and misuse. "We welcome properly researched conclusions because they provide opportunities to fine tune legislation and policies" said Mr Howat. "It would make more sense if people with an interest in firearm safety matters worked with the N Z Police and the NZ Mountain Safety Council instead of making outlandish comments."

"If Mr Alpers can provide evidence to support his speculation he should present it to the Police. If not, he should refrain from further comment."
