Artist Donates NZ$16,000 To Help Displaced Burmese Children
A Burmese artist in exile has donated NZ$16,000 to help educate Burmese children in refugee camps along the Thai-Burma border. The donation represents the proceeds from the sale of his paintings at a recent exhibition at Shed 11, Queens Wharf, on the Wellington waterfront.
Saw Khu Sae, an ethnic Karen, staged a solo exhibition with the help of 'Children on the Edge' - a charity focused on helping underprivileged children. The artist, who is himself a refugee, said he is delighted to be able to help displaced Burmese children.
The exhibition included paintings that depict internally displaced people, forced to hide in the jungles in fear of attacks by the Burmese army; Burmese migrant workers in Thailand exiled for economic reasons; and the conditions suffered by Burmese refugees in camps on the Thai-Burma border.
