Myanmar
“The independence of the legal profession is
a fundamental aspect of the rule of law, and the
imprisonment of lawyers in Myanmar because they are
representing people who oppose government policies is of
great concern to the New Zealand Law Society,” its
President, John Marshall QC, said today (26 November).
“Lawyers everywhere should have the right and the freedom to represent their clients without fear of intimidation or arrest by governments.
“We join with LAWASIA in calling on the Myanmar authorities to quash the sentences imposed on these courageous lawyers who have been imprisoned,” he said.
