Funds help prevent more civilian deaths in Pakistan

As civilians in Pakistan’s SWAT Valley region flee to IDP Camps amidst fighting, the threat of disease could claim even more lives than the exchange of gun fire between Pakistan troops and Taliban fighters, said TEAR Fund programmes director, Esther Ducai.

TEAR Fund New Zealand has committed more than $16000 to ensure diseases don’t claim more civilian lives. “Once you get hundreds of people crammed together in less than adequate conditions, diseases spread incredibly fast.” The money will be used to prevent diseases such as diarrhoea and malaria, she said.

“Our sympathies are very much with those who have fled to the camps. Many have lost loved ones and have had to leave their crops to rot in the ground. This will create ongoing hardship for these innocent civilians.”
