National leaves communities out in the cold

National leaves communities out in the cold Community Learning Association through schools (CLASS)

“National’s response to public debate on the night class cuts is gutless” says Maryke Fordyce - the President of the Community Learning Association through Schools.

“At no time has the Education Minister discussed the cuts with learners and community groups and that is because she can’t hide from the fact that this is a short sighted decision that is already having a devastating impact on communities across New Zealand”.

The decision by the government to cut 80% funding to school based ACE in 2010 has met widespread criticism from learners, community leaders, organisations and schools. Next year all funding for night classes will be withdrawn and 20% (approximately $3 million) “reinvested” into Numeracy, Literacy, Foundation Skills and NZ Deaf Sign Language. Schools will have to compete for the 20% funding and the government concedes that most schools that do apply will not receive funding.

“Anne Tolley is a Minister out of touch with community and it appears that most National MP’s are following suit choosing not to attend public meetings or any of the National Day of Action events held last weekend for fear of being confronted by the community outrage. The government will happily consult community about the National Standards for Literacy and Numeracy, but when it comes to community education through schools, will leave learners and the community out in the cold”.

Fordyce says that early indications show that a third of schools will close down their programmes. The organisation is supporting members through a period of change management.

“If anything, the lack of government response has strengthened our resolve to fight the cuts. We are overwhelmed by the level of support from communities as some are only now realising the impact of the cuts on them and they are organising locally driven protests. We are sorting out arrangements to present the petitions to Parliament but most of all we are seeking an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister John Key as we feel Minister Tolley does not comprehend the damage the cuts will have on most New Zealanders in this time of recession.
