Game Animal Council Discussion Paper

New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association Inc (NZDA) is pleased to support the release of the Options for Establishment of the New Zealand Game Animal Council discussion paper.

Most legislation pertaining to managing animals that live in the wild has not undergone major changes since the introduction of the Wild Animal Control Act in 1977. Within the current legislative environment, provision is made to control animal numbers, but no provision is made to manage deer, tahr, chamois or pigs for their recreational, tourism or commercial values.

The establishment of a Game Animal Council provides an opportunity for all people with an interest in these animals, including recreational and commercial hunters, deer farmers and game estates, to be involved in their future management.

Now that the discussion paper has been released, there will be a series of public consultation meetings in Auckland, Taupo, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin with public submissions closing on 16 November 2009.

NZDA encourages all hunters to attend the meetings if possible, and to obtain a copy of the discussion paper from www.gameanimalcouncil.org.nz and make submissions to the establishment committee.
