Union sends condolences to Samoan and Tongan people

The National Distribution Union passes on its condolences to all those who have lost loved ones in the tsunami.

NDU Fono convenor Terry Tuiletufuga says many New Zealand based Samoan and Tongan workers are NDU members and the thoughts of their union brothers and sisters are with them at this difficult time.

“We know things are going to be difficult as Samoans and Tongans rally to support their families and friends and to begin rebuilding homes, businesses and community facilities destroyed by the tsunami.

“Given the long tradition of New Zealand based Samoan and Tongan workers sending money back to the islands this is likely to involve sacrifice and hardship for them as well as those living in the islands.”

NDU general secretary Robert Reid says this is a time for all New Zealanders and the government to be generous in our assistance to the devastated islands.
