Women prepare to “Take Back the Night!”
PRESS RELEASE
Women prepare to “Take Back the
Night!” in Auckland
Marching against violence toward
women.
AUCKLAND: Women and supporters will march against
sexual violence this Friday evening
(27 November 2009).
“Take Back The Night” will begin at Albert Park at 7pm,
with a celebration of mutual support. There will be music
and speakers from women's groups in Auckland. At 8pm
participants will then march to Myers Park. The march will
be led by women and survivors.
Take Back The Night is
intended to show that walking safely at night should be a
right, and to support women walking together in solidarity.
Marches will take place simultaneously in Auckland and
Wellington.
“Take Back the Night is about
reclaiming our rights and freedom” says Take Back The
Night spokesperson Eliana Darroch. “Women should walk tall
and support each other. Together we are strong and
powerful.” This will be the fifth time she has
participated in the yearly march.
Take back the night is also about questioning urban myths, and standing up for justice. “We are told that if anything happens to us, we must have been asking for trouble. If we are assaulted, we are told it is our own fault, when actually, it is the perpetrator's fault.” says Ms. Darroch “These messages put the blame on us instead of on the perpetrators. It's time to build a culture of respecting women.”
The march is organised by a feminist group, the End Rape Culture Now! Collective (ERCNC). In October, ERCNC protested ACC cuts to sexual abuse counselling, with marches and rallies throughout New Zealand, and a hunger strike in Auckland.
ERCNC invites the public and supporters to join in Take Back the Night 2009. All are welcome to bring along acoustic musical instruments, noisemakers, home baking, candles and torches, and white ribbons from White Ribbon Day.
