The Ministry of Health is failing in its duty to the women of New Zealand, says Simonne Dyer, Deputy Leader of the Kiwi Party. An April 2009 study by Jessica Dolle et al of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centre examining the relationship between abortion and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) in women under the age of 45 contained an admission from the U.S. National Cancer Institute (NCI) researcher, Louise Brinton and her colleagues that abortion raises breast cancer risk by 40%.

In addition the researchers showed that women who start oral contraceptives before the age of 18 multiply their risk of TBNC by 3.7 times.

TBNC is an aggressive form of breast cancer, says Dyer, and although the study was published 9 months ago, the MOH and Family Planning Association have made no efforts to reduce breast cancer rates by issuing nationwide warnings to women.

It is interesting to note that Brinton was the chief organizer of the 2003 NCI workshop on the abortion-breast cancer link which falsely assured women that the non-existence of the link was “well established”. Now that further research has convinced Brinton otherwise, the Kiwi Party is calling on the MOH and Family Planning to make sure this information is widely disseminated.
