Ngāti Whātua Welcomes Framework Agreement for Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland)

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua has welcomed the framework agreement signed today recognising iwi interests in the volcanic cones, harbours and islands of the Auckland region.

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua chair, Naida Glavish, says the agreement is a significant step towards restoring the mana of Ngāti Whātua in Auckland.

“I am delighted with this step forward in our relationship with the Crown. Acknowledging our spiritual, traditional and historical interests in Tāmaki Makaurau is going to be good for our people, good for other iwi in the region and good for all Aucklanders.”

Naida Glavish says the framework agreement with Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau lays a great foundation for future generations growing up in Auckland. It recognises the area’s magnificent natural assets; from the maunga to moana to motu and their rich history and meaning for Ngāti Whātua as mana whenua as well as for more recent settlers.

She says the framework agreement builds on the work of Ngāti Whātua ancestors who sought to enable Ngāti Whātua to live in Auckland with mana, harmony and partnership.

“This agreement is another chapter to the great legacy that honours the great leadership and cooperation established by our forefathers such as Kawau and Sir John Logan Campbell, who worked tirelessly for the future of the city and its people.”

Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Whātua represents 34 marae across the Ngati Whatua rohe running from the Tamaki River in Auckland to Waipoua Forest and Whangarei in the North.
