Key’s secret visit an admission of failure

Key’s secret visit an admission of failure

Prime Minister John Key’s secret three-day visit to Afghanistan is an admission of failure. Nine years after the illegal invasion and occupation by foreign troops – including New Zealand SAS soldiers – security comes only through top secrecy, body armour and a helmet.

It’s not much to inspire confidence. New Zealand is losing the war.

Our troops are propping up a corrupt, illegitimate regime in Kabul made up of warlords and drug runners while the ordinary people of the country pay a heavy price for the occupation.

Meeting Hamed Karzai is the equivalent of meeting Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe. Both Karzai and Mugabe were voted in through electoral fraud and both survive only by oppression and murder.

John Key’s reason for New Zealand’s support for the war is the claim Afghanistan was used as a base for training terrorists. Key should recall that the Afghanistan government offered to transfer Osama bin Laden to a third country for trial on terrorism charges before the US-led invasion. The offer was ignored in the clamour for war.

The driver of terrorism which led to the high-profile terror attacks in New York and Bali is the foreign policy of the US and in particular its support for the racist policies of Israel towards Palestinians and the Israeli Arab population.

If John Key wishes to improve national security here he should organise a visit to Gaza to see first hand the suffering of the population there and the reason why the US and its allies are seen as targets.

If he did he could dispense with the body armour and helmet. The people of Gaza have welcomed many international visitors such as UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon.

Instead New Zealand has given the Palestinians the fingers by allowing the Israeli regime to set up an embassy in Wellington.

With his visit to Afghanistan and welcoming a Zionist embassy in Wellington Key has reduced the national security of New Zealand.
