Miners are ‘Flat Earthers’ ignoring global issues

Miners are the ‘Flat Earthers’, ignoring today’s Global issues

The recent march up Queen Street by 40,000 people opposed to mining led to desperate name calling by the mining industry, which labelled the anti miners as “Flat Earthers”.

The miners also accused anti-miners of hypocrisy “because they all use cars and electrical equipment”.

Spokesperson for Coromandel Watchdog Mark Tugendhaft says:

“ The mining industry is ignoring the 21st century issues of Global warming, energy and fresh water shortages. They also ignore the modern concept of sustainable land use. The covering of high grade farm land with 40million tones of toxic waste at Waihi is and example of this.” says Mr Tugendhaft

“In 19th century Industrial Revolution style, the mining industry offers temporary jobs, requiring masses of energy and natural resources. They take all the gold over seas , pay almost nothing for it and then hand the toxic waste piles back to local councils to deal with.”

“Their desire to operate on and under Conservation land and beautiful places like the Coromandel and Great Barrier directly threatens our sustainable industries of tourism and fishing and undermines New Zealand’s modern World image as a place to visit for a protected and unspoiled environment.”

“The gold being mined is not going into our computers. The percentage of gold going into industry has declined in the last few of years. The big banks, gold cartels and tradable commodity companies are wheeling and dealing, gathering this gold in anticipation of huge demand from China and India. They are controlling the supply and price of gold, like De beers controls diamond.”

“The march was just the tip of the iceberg. Surveys show that most people in New Zealand already oppose the Government’s mining our beautiful places. As the facts emerge, there will be overwhelming public opposition to the Government’s plan to hand over our land to international miners and investor banks.”
