9 out of 10 members say unfair
dismissal is wrong
An overwhelming majority of Public Service Association (PSA) members who took part in a poll agreed it was wrong for employees to have no right of appeal for unfair dismissal.
Of the 5,917 people who participated in the poll, 91.3 percent said it was not right that employees could be sacked with no right of appeal for unfair dismissal.
The PSA has a diverse membership and represents a large cross-section of society. This poll shows that most people see how manifestly unfair this law change will be. Changing jobs will become risky and young workers at the start of their working life will be particularly vulnerable.
“The Government has framed its proposed employment law changes as opportunities that make it easier for people to get jobs but there’s no evidence to support this,” says PSA National Secretary Richard Wagstaff.
“The Government’s proposed changes only serve to support unfair employers. The CTU has already highlighted cases where under the 90-day trial provision for small businesses, good employees were dismissed without explanation with no right of appeal.
“Fair processes already exist when an employee turns out to be unsuitable. Extending the 90-day provision to all businesses will simply mean more good employees will be sacked without a right of redress.
Richard Wagstaff says a recent One News poll where 60 percent of around 1000 participants were in favour of extending the 90 day trial to all companies may have had a different result if they were asked the right question.
“The PSA poll shows that when people are asked directly about the substance behind the proposed changes most New Zealanders do not support them,” says PSA National Secretary Richard Wagstaff.
