Ministry of Fisheries congratulates Honorary Fishery Officer on New Year’s honour

Ministry of Fisheries Acting Chief Executive Andrew Coleman has today congratulated Honorary Fishery Officer Murray Daniels from Motunau, North Canterbury who has received a Queen’s Service Medal in the New Year’s honours.

HFO Daniels has been recognised for his contribution to volunteer work in the Motunau community through many years of selfless service as an Honorary Fishery Officer and also as a volunteer fire fighter.

“Murray has made an outstanding contribution to his community, “Mr Coleman said. “He has put in many hours at the Motunau Boat Ramp over the past 10 years checking recreational fishers’ catch and educating people about fishing rules and responsible fishing.”

“His efforts, along with his colleagues, have ensured good quality recreational fishing and diving along the North Canterbury Coast and we are often told by the community how much this work is appreciated,” he said.

“All our Honorary Fishery officers throughout New Zealand do an excellent job, particularly over the busy holiday period, working hard when most people are taking a holiday,” said Mr Coleman. “I would like to thank all of them for the invaluable contribution they make to their communities.”

“Everyone who fishes or dives in New Zealand owes our volunteer Honorary Fishery Officers a debt of gratitude for the work they do, in their own time, to make sure our fisheries will be healthy, now and into the future.”

The best thing people can do to help our Honorary Fishery Officers this summer is to make sure they know the fishing rules before they go and to follow them when they are out on the water. The fishing rules for all areas of New Zealand are available on the Ministry of Fisheries website www.fish.govtnz, from most fishing and tackle shops or from any Ministry of Fisheries office.
