CTU backs early childhood Day of Action

CTU President Helen Kelly offered backing to today’s day of action calling on the Government to reverse the cuts to early childhood funding and commit to more investment in early childhood education.

Helen Kelly said: “The cuts to ECE funding will impact on the opportunity for young children to participate in education services and the ability of many parents, especially women, to take up job opportunities because of the increase in childcare fees. It is yet another failure on the part of this government to see the importance of employment equity for women, and the importance of education from the beginning of every child’s life.”

“The CTU will be encouraging its affiliated unions to support the petition to reverse the cuts and commit New Zealand to spending the UNICEF recommended 1 percent of GDP on early childhood education.”
