All New Zealanders Urged to Join Rally for Libyans

Libyan New Zealanders will be taking to the streets of Wellington tomorrow in support of relatives and friends protesting against Muammar Gaddafi’ 42-year dictatorship of their country.

They are urging other New Zealanders to join them.

“This is about human rights, basic human rights and dignity,” Newtown businessman and Libyan, Baha Mabruk said today. “Libyans have been denied a free voice for 42 years and they have had enough – they have found their voice,”

Libyan-New Zealander Yasmine El Orfi, a graphic designer and former lawyer of Wellington, said it was a disgrace that unarmed people marching peacefully were being shot and killed - many from aircrafts with large weapons used to shoot down airplanes.

“It seems that Gadaffi’s regime will stop at nothing to prevent the Libyan people reclaim their country and their dignity. The rest of the world has to condemn these brutal acts of violence and urgently step in to stop it. If we say nothing – we support it.”

The Rally for Libya will take place in Midland Park, 12pm Wednesday 23 February.
