Anti-Smacking Law Labelled ‘Weapon of Mass Destruction’

Family First NZ says that parenting is being put on trial as a result of the anti-smacking law, and that it is being used as a ‘weapon of mass destruction’ in custody battles.

“Parenting in New Zealand has been put on trial by politicians, and the latest case highlighted by Family First in the Sunday Star Times today is yet another example of a flawed law targeting decent law-abiding parents, and just how far this law has invaded good family homes,” says Bob McCoskrie , National Director of Family First NZ. “The law is being used as a weapon of mass destruction by disgruntled ex’s and in bitter custody disputes.”

“The politicians have dealt a heavy legislative and ideological blow to parents, and parents are feeling disempowered, disrespected, and are being demonised as potential child abusers.”

“In this latest case, the family has been put through hell for almost two years, charged for typical parenting practices and unsubstantiated claims made by unreliable sources, have been completely and utterly acquitted by their peers in a prolonged court case, yet still are unable to reunite their family because of the arrogance and unbridled power of CYF.”

Family First NZ is challenging Prime Minister John Key to deliver on his word – that if he saw good parents being criminalised as a result of the law, he would change it.

“If he can deliver the Hobbit movie under urgency, he can deliver a law that protects good parents just as quickly.”

“NZ’ers have no confidence in this law and are confused by it,” says Mr McCoskrie. “Good parents raising great kids deserve the support of the state – not criminalisation.”
