Bye Bye Queen, Hello Mr President

Republic of New Zealand Party leader, Kerry Bevin, wonders why we still celebrate Queen’s Birthday. He also wonders why we have her representative, the Governor General here.

“It’s absurd in today’s world,” he said

“Our PM seeking approval from an old lady on the other side of the planet makes him look like mummy’s boy really. It has nothing to do anymore with real Kiwis who come from all over the world.”

“Bye Bye Queen, Bye Bye Governor General, Hello Mr President.”

Mr Bevin referred to the work of New Zealand poet Allen Curnow who wondered back in the 1940’s ‘when we would learn the trick of standing upright here’

Mr Bevin said it was sad that New Zealanders are taking so long to claim their nationhood and take command of their own destiny

“Our colonial past has long gone, Britain deserted us in 1967 and the Prime Minister’s royal sycophancy is entirely inappropriate,” he said.

Republic of New Zealand policy is to educate New Zealanders on modem republicanism and put the issue to a referendum in 2014.

Real Republicans believe a Presidential model of governance is best for a modern democracy.

The President is elected and accountable under a Constitution that would supersede the Treaty

Mr Bevin said the reconciliation process under the Treaty of Waitangi Act would continue until all claims had been heard and settled.

The Governor General’s residence would become the President’s.

“A new flag and protocols and the abolition of Maori seats would make us like Ireland, the USA, France, Germany, South Africa and Samoa where all citizens are equal before the law under the constitution,” Mr Bevin said.
