Impact of anti-spam law being surveyed

Internal Affairs’ Anti-Spam Compliance Unit is conducting a survey to gauge the impact of the four-year-old Unsolicited Electronic Messages (UEM) Act and incoming spam on New Zealand businesses and individuals.

The Act took effect on 5 September 2007 to prohibit unsolicited commercial electronic mail and enable legal action to be taken against New Zealand-based spammers. The unit has issued three statements of claim, 18 infringement notices and 218 formal warnings.

The survey seeks business attitudes to unsolicited electronic messages and communications, the awareness and effectiveness of the legislation and regimes that regulate these communications. It is open to all New Zealand organisations and individuals. All responses will be anonymous and confidential and used only for statistical information and reporting.
