Harawira Wins Against All Odds

Press Release

Harawira Wins Against All Odds

President of Mana Matt McCarten

“Yesterday the Electoral Commission declared the official results of the by-election for Te Tai Tokerau. The result was a resounding victory to Hone Harawira” states Mana President Matt McCarten. “Despite numerous political commentators and journalists predicting the contrary, Harawira recaptured his seat under the mantle of Mana and against all odds”.

“I have been involved in politics for over twenty years and I have never witnessed a politician receive such a barrage of criticism and personal attacks from nearly all political parties and from most sections of the media. Yet despite their best efforts to kill Mana, they failed. A party that truly represents the interests of Maori, the poor and those in the lower income bracket has been born. Harawira and Mana have withstood the onslaught of the so-called ‘Labour Machine’, an organisation that invested all of its resources and personnel into the by-election to try and bury Harawira and the newest party on the block. Despite their best efforts Labour failed and copped a fairly comprehensive loss to Harawira and Mana by over 1100 votes”.

“The spin coming from Labour is that Harawira will be lucky to win back his seat in the November elections. This is despite the fact that they lost by close to ten percent, despite that every anti-Harawira vote would have been registered in the by-election, despite the fact that they will never have another opportunity to pour as many resources and personnel towards winning one seat and despite Harawira’s new profile as a party leader. Any politico worth their salt would be wise not to believe the words of Goff. That includes his best efforts to convince voters that he will not work with Harawira should he be in a position to form a Labour-led Government. Consider this – If Goff does not pull together a coalition of the left to topple the current National-Maori Party-ACT coalition, do you think he will retain his spot as the leader of Labour after the election?”

“Te Tai Tokerau voters deserve to have their decision respected and are being patted on the back by every left-leaning voter in the country for giving birth to Mana. They have led the way for other like-minded people to join their ranks come November. Their courage will not be a wasted exercise as Harawira will retain Te Tai Tokerau and Mana will grow to become a political force to be reckoned with.
