Pyjamas in the Park

16 September 2011

Pyjamas in the Park

At 8am on Monday 19 September The Tree Council, supported by its celebrity friends (Faye Smythe and Labour MP Jacinda Ardern (others TBC), will wake twenty-four giant pyjama-clad trees in Albert Park. Their message will be for the Auckland community to pledge their support to protect Auckland’s trees.

The ‘Pyjamas in the Park’ event is part of The Tree Council’s new ‘Support Your Roots’ campaign which is creating the opportunity for everyone to participate in the celebration of Auckland’s trees.

People can tweet to @TreeCouncil or post photos of their favourite Auckland Trees on The Tree Council Facebook page, along with its location and why it is important to them. The growth of the tree will be mapped and monitored on the ‘Support Your Roots’ website, which will also be launched on the 19 September.

Pip Mules, The Tree Council board member, said they are concerned that the changes to the Resource Management Act, which comes into force in January 2012, have been misinterpreted.

“The changes appear to give property owners the right to cut down any tree on their property, but this is definitely not the case.

“Existing tree protection rules will remain in many situations. Therefore it is crucial for landowners to contact the Auckland Council for information before embarking on any tree modifications” Said Mrs Mules.

The Tree Council is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1986 with the purpose of protecting, conserving, and improving tree cover in the Auckland region. It advocates that trees are a valuable asset to the wider community.
