Eliminating Violence Against Women

Right to life supports the United Nations global White Ribbon Day celebrated on 25th November each year. It is sponsored in New Zealand by the Families Commission. The object of this campaign is to raise public awareness of violence against women and to condemn this violence.

Violence against women is endemic and a national tragedy. Every year on average fourteen women are killed by a member of their own family. The Police receive 70,000 family violence calls each year. There are on average 3,500 convictions every year against men for violence inflicted on women. Violence against women is always a violation of human rights; it is always a crime and it is always unacceptable.

This White Ribbon campaign is being led by men who condemn violence against women. Abortion is also violence against women, often the result of men abandoning the mother and the child they have fathered. This abandonment is appalling and is itself a form of violence.

If we as a community are sincerely opposed to violence against women, it is absolutely imperative that we recognise that after murder, abortion is the ultimate in violence against women.

Abortion is the rape of a woman’s womb. Consider the abortionist, a doctor with a firm determination to destroy the child, forces his way into the womb of the prostrate and helpless woman. The child alarmed at the unexpected intrusion into his home, his mother’s womb, reals in terror at the approaching instrument of death and with heart racing in terror seeks frantically to avoid the instrument. The child’s mouth is opened wide in a silent scream as the instrument tears the arms and legs off the child. This is violence against women and their children. The result of this violence is a dead baby and a wounded mother.

It is a tragedy that this violence is actually sanctioned by the government. It is called a core health service, with unlimited funding and no waiting list. As an essential service all District Health Boards are required to provide it. This is an appalling abuse of women sanctioned by the government. This violence is happening every day in our Public Hospitals. Why do we call this violence a health service?

Abortions are free and are funded by us the taxpayer, It is a tragedy that we are all implicated against our will in this violence against women. We thus have the blood of the innocents on our hands. If we as a society really want to eliminate violence against women, we need to stop the violence of abortion.
