Labour leadership consultation meetings

Labour leadership consultation meetings

Labour Party members will be given the opportunity to meet, listen to and question candidates for the Labour Party leadership at a series of meetings scheduled to be held throughout the country before the Labour Caucus meets on 13 December to elect its new Leader and Deputy Leader.

The meetings will take place on the following dates and venues will be confirmed shortly:

• Monday, 5 December, 5.30pm: Hamilton
• Tuesday, 6 December, 7pm-9pm: Palmerston North
• Wednesday, 7 December, 6pm-8pm: Wellington
• Thursday, 8 December, 7pm-9pm: Christchurch
• Friday, 9 December, 7pm-9pm: Dunedin
• Sunday, 11 December, 2.30pm-4.30pm: Auckland

“Whilst the Party Constitution stipulates that the decision on the Party leadership is ultimately a Caucus vote, we believe it is important that the wider Party has the opportunity to engage with the contenders for the leadership. We are inviting Party members to attend these consultation meetings and provide feedback to their local MPs about the leadership contest” said Labour Party General Secretary, Chris Flatt.

“We have high calibre MPs putting themselves forward for the leadership positions. We believe that whatever the outcome of the ballot for the Party leadership, we will be well served to lead a strong opposition to the National led government as we rebuild after the recent election campaign” said Mr Flatt.

The meetings are open to current Labour Party members only. In accordance with the Labour Party Constitution, the formal leadership vote will be undertaken by Caucus members on 13 December. Accordingly, no formal voting or straw polls will be undertaken by those present at the consultation meetings.
