International Volunteer Day – Celebrating Diverse Volunteers

International Volunteer Day – Celebrating Diverse Volunteers for 10 years

2011 marks the ten year anniversary of International Year of Volunteers (IYV+10) which ties in with International Volunteer Day this coming Monday.

The Christchurch Earthquake, Rena disaster and Rugby World Cup have all provided numerous and diverse ways for New Zealanders to get involved with volunteering this year.

Executive Director of Volunteering New Zealand, Vanisa Dhiru says that “Volunteers are the foundation of our society, proven throughout 2011 with volunteers building and promoting New Zealand”.

“Volunteering New Zealand calls for the social profit sector to get creative on role planning and development of volunteer jobs, and be sure to explore the skills that potential volunteers can offer for the time they can offer. Get to know your potential volunteer force and use them in the best way possible to achieve your objectives and mission.”

Since 2001, volunteering has become more dynamic and is responding to the changing times. People are giving their time in different ways – episodic or spontaneous volunteering.

Volunteering continues to be a great way to for people to get involved in their local communities. Data from another report “How New Zealanders Give”, published by the Office for the Community and Voluntary Sector, shows more than one million New Zealanders aged 10 years and over volunteer, and on average they volunteer 10 hours per week.

“The latest ‘Generosity Indicators’ released today by the Office of Community and Voluntary Sector indicate the hours of contribution by volunteers are stable with indications of an overall increase in the percentage of people volunteering between September 2010 and September 2011” says Vanisa Dhiru.
